About this book
I started dating Jamie freshman year of high school.
One of the reasons I asked her out was her mother.
Seven years later, I know the alarm code, the garage code, and which bottle in the liquor cabinet Steve pretends not to notice getting lower. I bring coffee for everyone. I fix things around the house without being asked. I carry the kind of trust that only comes from being around so long nobody remembers what the family looked like without me.
Then Steve buys a thirty-six-thousand-dollar RV without telling Erin, drives away in it after the fight, and leaves his wife alone in a house where I already have a drawer.
I should probably mention that I love Jamie. I should also mention that loving her has never once stopped me from wanting Erin.
For seven years, I have been patient, present, and perfectly positioned. The cocktail is sweet, but the Scotch has smoke in it.
Steve left the bottle unattended.
